When trying to startup the hard drive just clicks and the screen displays a folder with a question mark. What does this mean?

It usually means your hard drive is failing. Do a backup of your files asap.

I had this happen to me and it was very unfortunate. This means that the computer can't find a hard drive, and the clicking sound means that your hard drive itself is messed up. I took mine to the Apple store Genius Bar, and the guy told me that its too late to recover any files, and i needed a completely new hard drive. I got lucky and the guy put in a new drive for me for free.

It´s possible to backup the info on your HD, but your Mac needs technical support.
They have to open the Mac and connect the HD to another Mac to got your personal data.
Yes, it´s a little expensive.
Man! please...! for anyone that got a computer Mac or PC, backup your data periodically.
Everyone is vulnerable to this unfortunate incidents.

What will I lose in order to restore a time machine on my Macbook Pro? I have a very important paper and all m y Mac does is display a white screen and a question mark over a file. I know that this means my hard drive is going out. But what will I lose if I try to restore my time machine.
