Get Rid of Your MacBook Warranty Once and For All

What does a MacBook Pro, Sony Puppy FIU-600, and a Dremel have in common? Put those three together, and you end up with a destroyed MacBook a built-in thumb reader.

Needless to say, this mod isn't for the faint of heart. Even the modder himself accidentally scuffed the casing of his MacBook. This obviously voids your warranty, so don't try this at home.

Step 1: Cut a hole in the case:

MacBook Pro Thumb Reader

Step 2: Do technical stuff to make it all work:

MacBook Pro Thumb Reader
MacBook Pro Thumb Reader
MacBook Pro Thumb Reader

Step 3: Check if the MacBook still works:

MacBook Pro Thumb Reader

Step 4: MacBook, Meet Thumb Reader:

MacBook Pro Thumb Reader

Not worth the effort!

Yeeeaaaahhh... then when it doesn't work... how do explain to the Mac store why I was cutting a hole in my MacBook Pro??? Because I'm Wile E. Coyote and I got this kit from ACME???

The guy who did this mod works as an Apple technician.

Ruins all. ACDT/ACPT

I'd rather just have a Pro that works and has a waranty.

I disagree. The fingerprint reader is a worthwhile feature, and one of the few black marks *against* a MBP when comparing against PC hardware.
"Not worth the effort?" Perhaps not, but Apple should include a fingerprint reader in the next gen MBP. (and a couple more USB ports)

Not going to do that to my beloveth macbook
Posted by banter on December 23, 2007
I stopped doing this after my C64 era...

hi i am i am fred and i agree with lindsay

You should have done this on a 17" Macbook Pro, it has wider grills.
Posted by B-RED on April 09, 2008
Waste of time, who needs een fingerprintreader when you can identify yourself using a password. It might be "cool" but its unnesessary. and thats probably why it's not build in already
Posted by Midge on May 06, 2008
good concept... but poorly implemented

i like u chris
Posted by lindsay on June 05, 2008
I think it could work but you would need a apple opener/wirer to do the connecting and who needs one biult in when you can get usb ones from most pc stores and one last thing who in the world has enough guts to do that with a R21,500 mackbook pro I definatly wouldn't

You know, some people take the web too seriously. Learn to laugh; learn to roll with it.

For the rest of you, I can only stare awkwardly.

And by the way, yeah, this mod isn't worth it, but it is so cool FTW!
Posted by Nojathan on June 24, 2008
What's the point! Mac OS X won't recognise the fingerprint reader. So you end up typing in the password anyway me thinks.

Like it.. but not going to do it on a MacBook Pro.... -.-

Well..
I dont know anything about computers :)
Posted by Kayli on August 13, 2008
i think that is totally wicked!!!!!
Posted by epic doom on September 14, 2008
useless mod... On many corporate computers (PC) we have to disable fingerprint readers since the often dont work with domain logon when having to change the domain password every 90th day.

Having this mod or feature on a Mac would have the same problem, it would have to be disabled do to problems with domain passwords and keyrings..

Otherwise on a personal Mac I wouldn't mind this feature..

honestly i think a retinal scanner would be more sufficient on a macbook using the isight....now that would be a kickass mod that i would do in a heartbeat

cant u buy a seperate thumb pad or w.e. and use that? im sure they make them for computers. Do they not??

hi, i have a macbook pro and a Lenovo T61... and i use the fingerprint just for strong passwords for admin my DNS or exchange server.

but the password you must have in the head.. if you scratch you finger...

Man, i had to remove a bunch of thumb readers of fujitsu's. That mod is pointless. Find a better mod, before you go and rip your laptop apart. The holes look horrible cut like that.
Posted by mark on January 04, 2009
this is so cool...
But does it work?
Posted by patricia & vaugn on February 20, 2009
A lot of negativity!
I'd love to have a fingerprint reader in my MBP, i have a USB one and you just can't carry it everywhere.

Where can i get help on how to do something like this?
Posted by Tich on February 22, 2009
Why not just buy a $50 external UPEK Fingerprint Scanner from the apple store?
Posted by Tomtheapple on April 13, 2009
Why not just say, wow dude your crazy to do that, way to be the first (as far as I am aware) and thanks for sharing! I personally dont want to go that route but its very interesting and lightened my day!
Keep innovating/modding and SHARING them with us all!

Bunch of fucking sissy mac owning poseurs.
"Ooooh no what would he say when he had to take it back to the mac store"

Fuck your mac store. If you can do a mod like this, what makes you think you need to go to some uneducated cretin working at macworld to fix anything.

The entire premise of this article is retarded. So the author's only points seem to be that he voided his warranty, and reduced the resale value of his computer. For a guy who, at least online, seems to position himself as a Mac expert you certainly are taking a non-technical, schoolgirl look at this. "It's not pretty anymore. Wah. He scratched the pretty case. Wah. Voided the warranty now apple doesn't protect me from the big bad world. Wah." Please, man. If the guy can install a biometric scanner he probably doesn't need Apple to fix his machine when it goes down. Resale value? Are you kidding me? Like, the resale value of old computers is generally so high that it's a shame to hack one up? Oh, the humanity! Dude, get real. He said "resale". LOL! What a laugh. It's a computer, not a corvette stingray. It's OK to modify it. Don't be such a panzy. In fact, hacking up hardware and operating systems is generally what the more talented people end up doing because they want features that either don't commercially exist or they are far, far too cost prohibitive for the average wallet so they go DIY. Kudos to EDAHC (guy who did this) for having the balls to go for it and not worry that his perty lil case might be all scratchy. *sniffle, sniffle*

Man, what a Sally-boy you are... and obviously jealous.

Won't you have to install software to make it work???
