MacBook Mod: See How Easily You Can Get Your Own Apple Logo

See How Easily You Can Get Your Own Apple Logo

With just a few sheets of transparency paper you can mod your MacBook's Apple logo to glow green, red, blue, or any other color that tickles your fancy. This quirky mod is one of the few that doesn't require an engineering degree. Simply insert a few sheets of your favorite color inside the casing of your MacBook's screen and your new shining logo will bring you fame and love. Okay, maybe not.. but it's definitely neat, won't you agree?

Red Apple Logo Mod:

The mod is surprisingly simple. It involves nothing more than a few sheets of your-preferred-color transparency paper inserted inside the screen casing of your MacBook. Here's a few words by one of the modders:

I took my screen apart without the little grey clips off. I used a very blunt knife to slide gently along the bezel then when it stopped on a clip just a little gentle twist and up it popped. the screws weren't a problem either. I used a sharp knife to initially start them turning then used a screw driver to remove. The ones I found annoying were the little blighter's near the magnets when putting them back in.

I found that I needed extra layers of the coloured plastic film that I used to get the red not looking too pink. But my green leaf was just fine with 1 layer.

The mod isn't completely original. Similar mods were performed on the iBook only a few years ago..

Unfortunately incompatible with the coloured clamshell G3's but there coloured anyway... powerbook G4 looks mental cool!

How 2 do the retro one on 13" MacBook ?
Posted by abdu on December 02, 2007
Any ideas how the retro logo was made? Seems a little more complicated than having a single color logo...but would look awesome!
Posted by Matt on December 13, 2007
Would love to try this, but not enough to void my warranty. Maybe after the Apple Protection Plan has expired...
Posted by Ben on December 22, 2007
What is if i dont have a Macbook (bcause i have a Macbook Pro) how can i do it then
Posted by Tristan on December 26, 2007
Lol i just did this on my macbook a few days ago, and just came upon this. It looks awesome! and people stare a lot more hah, good job though
Posted by Jorge on December 30, 2007
Is There other websites that have all different colours to put on apple logo?
Posted by Brodxx on December 31, 2007
This is pretty good I guess... for an amateur.

Go to iColours.ca :]
Posted by MacGenius on January 15, 2008
very nice mod infact one of the classyest
Posted by Anonymous on February 17, 2008
the retro one could be achieved by gluing strip of the colored transparency paper to a white sheet. You would have to glue two or three strips of each to achieve a bold color. Is this correct? Anyway i am wicked jealous of the retro and can't wait to give this a crack on my 13inch macbook. Does anyone have a tried and test way of achieving the retro look?

After taking the bezel off (of the Macbook), well, good luck getting it back on without gluing it. The clips bend no matter how careful you are and you won't be able to get it back on without taking the clips off and gluing it back on, or buying a new bezel. I would think twice about doing it, mine looks cool, but I wouldn't do it again...

hey guys, it is a very bad idea to put colour transperacy paper behind the casing as it could melt or even catch fire from the inside of the macbook from the overheating.
Unfortuantly we do not warranty items destroyed in this way

yours sincerely. . . . . Kurt Robinson
Posted by macbook pro-fessional on March 03, 2008
full of shit kurt robinson, what do you think makes it white? retard!
Posted by hhh on March 15, 2008
This seems kindof pointless. Sure it looks cooler but sure to kill warranty/applecare unless you somehow get the Apple store to do it for you. I just painted mine and it looks cool too, maybe not *as* cool but it draws a lot of looks.

Posted by Madison on April 06, 2008
how do you make the rainbow one??
and would the rainbow one look good on a black macbook???
Posted by jrk on April 14, 2008
LOL, Laughed my ass off on Kurt Robinson's comment. And the one after that.
Oh, and Kurt, you really are a Dumb Fu*k Pal. Seriously, stay away from Mod/Tweak sites. It is bad for your mental health. Especially when you come back to read quotes on your comment , like this one. LMAO.
Posted by Brad on April 17, 2008
Can you please including any german instructions how to do this?
That would be very nice and helpfull for many apple users from switzerland austria and germany..... im sure.
Posted by Cullum on April 19, 2008
dpn't think it would void the warranty unless the problem is with the screen. I work as an Apple Technical Support agent for desktops, portables, airports and ipod nanos.... so, unles the problem s with the screen we are all safe here.. I've taken calls from people who have mod their desktops to some sorta alien machines..
hav fun!!! i will keep comming back to this page for the follow ups if anyone have any doubts...
Posted by AJ on April 25, 2008
or if u need a replacement of the portable..then probably the warranty would come into existence.. but if its just a minor hardware problem like...for eg. the HDD prob..then its ok...
Posted by AJ on April 25, 2008
I just like my white apple and doesnt want to void my warranty

this IS HARD TO DO, it also voids your warrenty and can come out bad !

but i did it !

Step by step -

* Remove the thin cover around your screen, bit of force but it does come off.

* unscrew about 20 screws.

* fold the monitor down (very carefully)

* Dont touch where it says DO NOT TOUCH ! lol

* Break away the plastic seal thing and rip it off.

* Use sand paper to gring off the white plastic stuff glued down (this takes at least 15-30 mins and is the hardest part)

* Apply a Blue (for example) piece of translucent paper over the back of the apple logo and fix with tape.

* Screw back in the monitor

* Put back on the flimsy plastic stuff.

( I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS TO PEOPLE WITH OUT BRAINS AND BALLS ) in a non sexist way !

Is it possible to make only the border coloured?
On the white macbook the logo is not clear enough i think.
If i would have a black macbook, i would skip this mod.

But becaus i have a white, i'm interested making a coloured border on it.
Posted by menoe on May 30, 2008
well I dont care if you have a white so shut the hell^^^^^^
Posted by fat jim on June 03, 2008
Looks fantastic. I like the green one, should look good on my white Macbook. But I'll wait until my warranty is up, just in case. :-)
Posted by Dimsie on June 22, 2008
You can use almost anything to do this, don't waste 5 bucks on "special" paper, and it doesn't have to be translucent, just on the thinner side so the light shines through. If you don't care about the light then prob even thicker paper will work. I have a small piece of wrapping paper of which I liked the design in mine. It has been in there for over a year and no problems (read cumbustion) whatsoever.
